José Luis Torres

André Michel

Exhibition: April 17 to June 3

Opening reception: April 17 at 7 pm

After completing his studies in architecture and visual arts, José Luis Torres embarked on a professional sculpture career in his native Argentina. His practice, which revolves around the creation of nomadic structures, became an allegory of his own existence and feelings of displacement.

Reaffirming the idea that there are no longer any boundaries or borders in terms of spatial relations, the artist uses sculpture to create art by transforming the space that contains and surrounds nature and its elements. He explores its concrete and aesthetic aspects on the basis of two types of perception: one physical and tangible, and the other mental and subjective. From real or experienced space to fictional or imaginary space, this work takes shape via a series of relationships between form, materials and spatial layout.  More recently, and as another way of further exploring the same spatial paradigm, his work has been more installation-based, somewhere between sculpture and architecture.

Focusing on the notions of nomadism, territory and identity, the artist’s work fits within this new practice: the creation of perceptible relationships in spaces that become places of exploration and creation, like a laboratory. Blurring the boundaries between the exhibition space and the work occupying it, he “reconstructs” according to the topographical, functional and human features of each investigation site. His work draws on an accumulative, viral and invasive esthetic, and every creation shifts from object to situation.

Whether outdoors or in-gallery, his projects are developed to be site-specific and are aimed at revitalizing the relationship between their various components, the space in which they are mounted and the people interacting with them. In this way, the artist creates “user-friendly” environments where visitors are invited to experience and experiment with the space in a journey and process of discovery.

The installation created for the CCFM Gallery space looks at the ideas of transformation, links and movement. It is a reflective exploration on the notion of the creative process, developed from constructions that are cobbled together to suggest precarious architecture. The artist creates a series of works that remind us that architecture is relational, a medium of experimentation. A mix of utopia, vestiges and aesthetics, architecture functions on intuition.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Life is a game, like survival. The game is based on the relationship with the world via trial and error, coincidences and intentions; a gesture in the image of our societies teetering on the brink between order and chaos.

In the context of the project developed for the CCFM, creativity born out of the need to survive produces something between sculpture and organic architecture, spontaneous and progressive, a work with an accumulative, viral and invasive aesthetic, the construction of which shifts from object to situation. The overall installation emerges as a mysterious product, an individual work of unknown origin.

I use recycled building materials to complement existing content. The notions of landscape and architecture are revealed through a process of accumulation and appropriation, and demonstrate an overt attachment to the figure of the home. The result is the mapping out of a fictional route along which observers can experience the work as they walk.
